finally the pitter patter of the rain drops stop, coincidentally the ending symphony of "band of brothers" begins playing on tv. they say war brings out the best and the worst in people. Stephen E Ambrose - " They also found in combat the closest brotherhood they ever knew. They found selflessness. They found they could love the other guy in their foxhole more than themselves. THey found that in war, men who loved life would give their lives for them." the brotherhood and unity of these men is what i look for in rugby. the trust and willingess to sacrifice for any other member of ur team is the key. the only way to create that is through the commitment to common suffering and stress of training. i remember this mtv of the song Peng You ( Friend ) , there was a scene of a team doing scrumming during a rainy night, i guess if you were part of that team these sort of experiences will be what bonds you together. i do have certain similar memories from last year...the times when ningyan dragged sherman and i during sprints n when yeow kuan pressed me to not give up during one of the canal runs. somehow i miss those times, it just made me feel part of something special. i just hope it'll be the same this year and to make it sweeter we'll bring it home, the gold, our precious. i don't intend to let anyone down this year.

i don't really care if its chinese new year. somehow over the years it has lost its meaning together with christmas, the new year and etc. -ahem- basically today i shall attempt to be a poser and talk about the Hegelian theory of history. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's theory when stripped to its bare bones is about the immense importance of the role of individuals in the creation of history.
Such are all great historical men - whose own particular aims involve those larger issues which are the will of the world-spirit. They may be called Heroes, inasmuch as they have derived their purposes and their vocation, not from the calm, regular course of things . . . but from a concealed fount . . . from that inner Spirit, still hidden beneath the surface. indeed history does seem to be shaped by great men who were able to see the needs of the day and harness the power of the masses to meet his own needs. 1905 and 1848 are good examples of failures due to the lack of concrete and sensible leadership. now take a look at the revolution of 1917 - success - some argue that its because of the failings of opposition but it is impossible to ignore the fact that Lenin and Trotsky played enormous roles in the final victory of the Russian Civil War in erh.. 1922 right? to take another perspective. Hegel believed that the holy spirit worked through the individual to shape mankind but check out the many individuals who shaped mankind and history by inflicting massive pain and suffering because of their grotesque and selfish personal aims. Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo and to a lesser extent Franco. not forgetting Stalin. that's the flaw in his theory i suppose. but i ain't sure. i wonder how i could have come so far from playing CM to replyin my buddy and now expounding the basic facts of Hegelian view of history. argh... happy new year all... its past 12...already shou-ed shui ( if anyone of u chinese failures dun know what it means - its actually a chinese custom ) going to punk myself up for visiting tomorrow...hahahahz... posted by Down the rabbit hole we go. at Wednesday, January 21, 2004
i watched the video so many times. i just wonder how that level of perfection is achieved, its so difficult to push it to such limits. the spear is just such a beauty. devasting and graceful, aerodynamic and brutal, the ultimate weapon. the physicality and high work rate is totally insane. -shrug- something to strive for. not much time left.
